Police Report on Building Collapse

From the Middletown Police Department

Today, February, 2, 3011, the Central Dispatch Center in Middletown received calls of a building collapse at 505 Main St which is an office building.  As of right now there are no injuries.  Two people were in the building and able to get out.  When the building collapsed debris (bricks) shot across the street.  Due to concern for the integrity for surrounding buildings all buildings surrounding the collapse were evacuated.
CL&P and Yankee Gas were called to the scene to shut off the power and gas.

The Fire Department and Police Department are working to evacuate the area and make it safe prior to any further investigation.

We are asking that all Press personnel stage in the City Lot off of Washington St near Kid City.  Main Street is closed from Washington St to Liberty Street.  Ferry Street is blocked also.  Please advise motorists to avoid the area if possible.

The Middletown Fire Department will hold a press conference in the city lot near Kid City at 2:00 pm.  We are asking the Press to please stay out of the area of the collapse for their safety.

Nothing further at this time

So glad no one was injured. That building, a former school, was a bit of Middletown's history. Boxing champion Willie Pep (who was born in Middletown) trained in the gym on the top floor.

I guess the owners hadn't gotten around to taking care of the snow on the roof?
