Should Be School Tomorrow

Wondering why, exactly, Middletown Public Schools were closed today (for the third straight day), I called the Superintendent's office. According to the person with whom I spoke, because resources were diverted yesterday from plowing to responding to the Main Street emergency, the city advised Dr. Frechette that they could not guarantee all roads would be adequately plowed to enable the safe operation of school busses. The superindendent's office anticipates that schools will be open tomorrow on a normal schedule.

Who has inspected the school roofs? It is easy to understand that the conditions of the streets in Middletown are not upto par due to yesterday's events on Main Street; however, it is very concerning that the person at the BOE responded to you about conditions of the city streets vs.the conditions of our city schools; hopefully, the BOE has taken the time today to call in the building inspector & fire departments to take a look at the numerous flat roofs of our schools......the National Guard has been assisting Vernon schools to remove snow from their roofs in order to be proactive. Hopefully, Middletown BOE is taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of our students.

To Anonymous: check out "School Roofs To Be Cleared Over Weekend" posted here at 4:30pm yesterday by Ed McKeon

To Tracey said: What if there is too much weight up there now, is it safe for the kids to be there tomorrow? Some of these schools are leaking beyond belief and the water weight up there can create a very dangerous environment. Do you want 300 kids sitting under that when the groaning(Windsor) or the cracks (Vernon) start taking place?

Thanks Steve for checking and posting. I knew I'd find the answer here. I do think Dr. Frechette should have emailed the "eye" with that information...lots of people were questioning and communication is always a good idea. I don't think its asking too much for the superintendent to communicate with parents in these situations.

Am getting a little worried what the bill is going to look like for this extraordinary weather.

Just wondering why the school doesn't get the roofs cleared during regular hours, instead of more OT this weekend.

So why haven't they started cleaning off the roofs already. Vernon had National guard in helping out with cleaning the roofs. Why can't Middletown do the same.

The teachers didn't even get told why schools were canceled today. You think we would have gotten an e-mail.

As a parent and educator, I am concerned about the safety of our children after hearing about all the roofs collapsing due to the snow. If we were looking out for the safety of our children and staff, school should be cancelled until the roofs are clear and inspected as safe.

Will there be school tomorrow?

Rumor is the public works has run out of sand and salt to treat the roads. A lot of the side roads are still very narrow and icy

its possible the school roofs were cleaned yesterday but how would we know...Mr. Superintendent never communicates...I heard a school roof was being cleaned yesterday...why can't he simply communicate and end all the rumors and angst going on...spare me Mr. Raczka with your mid-year approval of Frechette. Simple communication between Frechette and parents/teachers would be appreciated!!!
