Registration is now open for Middletown’s third annual “Minds in Motion” program, which will take place Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Wilbert Snow Elementary School from 12:30-4:00 pm.
“Minds in Motion” is an afternoon of fun, fast-paced, hands-on workshops geared to high-interest, motivated students in grades K-8. Workshops are designed to encourage curious students to try new experiences in a variety of subject areas. This year’s workshops range from tessellations to dance, mathematics, pottery, chemistry, karate, circus, theater, art, fitness, cooking, magic, African drumming and dance, and much more. The complete brochure, as well as online registration, is available at http://www.ctgifted.org/events/MindsInMotion.htm or email mimmiddletown@gmail.com or call 860-347-2579 (Snow School) to request a brochure. Financial aid is available to any student in need. Workshops will fill up quickly and are open to students throughout the greater Middletown area and beyond, so early registration is recommended. The registration deadline is March 1.
The afternoon also includes free workshops for parents and teachers, including a keynote forum on the topic Supporting Your Child’s Social and Emotional Needs and the following workshops: Practical Ways to Help Children Become Better Thinkers and Writers (by Nathan Levy, nationally known educator/author), Engaging Students With the Curriculum Through Circus Arts, Gearing Up For and Staying Sane Through the College Admission Process, What You Need to Know About Saving For College, and Managing Stress Through Yoga. The Vendor and Exhibitor area will highlight local programs and organizations and other resources of interest to families, and a variety of educational materials, books, and games will be available for purchase.
The event is co-sponsored by the Snow School PTO and the Connecticut Association for the Gifted (CAG), which has organized “Minds in Motion” events throughout the state for many years. Volunteers from Macdonough School and Independent Day School have been key collaborators, and local organizations and individuals have responded enthusiastically to the program.
More volunteers will be needed on the day of the event. The committee is also still registering vendors and exhibitors, with an early bird special rate for those confirmed before February 28. Please contact mimmiddletown@gmail.com for more information.
Thank you to the following organizations participating so far: ArtFarm, Community Health Center, Cromwell Martial Arts, Future Problem Solvers of CT, Green Street Art Center, KidCity Children’s Museum, Oddfellows Playhouse, Stepping Stones Museum for Children, Talcott Mountain Science Center, Vinnie’s Jump & Jive, Wesleyan Potters, and Wesleyan University.

I already learned something from this as I had to look up Tesselations to see what that is. This event looks wonderful.
I heard Nathan Levy speak a couple of years ago at Minds in Motion. Listening to his talk about how we need to teach kids to handle failure and keep on trying until they succeed was one of those "AHA!" parenting moments. His advice has had a huge positive impact on how I raise my child. I'm really looking forward to hearing what he has to say this year.
