Trench Rescue training begins this morning 9/21/2010 at Middletown Fire Headquarters. Part of the technical rescue aspect of our services, this training will last 3 weeks. During this time the Connecticut Fire Academy will be delivering the program through their adjunct instructors. Intructors who are experts in their field including one from FDNY, will deliver this to both firefighters from Middletown and New Haven Fire Departments. The City of Middletown Water and Public works departments will also be participating. At the end of classes, Our firefighters will be certified by the CFA in trench rescue. The equipment you see here was purchased by Middletown Fire and will be added to Rescue 1's arsenal in technical rescue equipment. Any questions regarding this program can be forwarded to Assistant Chief Woron, Battalion Chief Ricci, or Chief Ouellette at (860)343-8004. We thank our administration and public for providing us with this opportunity.

This press release invites questions, so here's one: what is "trench rescue"? I'd never heard of it, there is no description here, and it's not clear why it's important.
Here's a definition, from wikipedia: "Trench rescue is a specialized form of rescue, a subset of confined space rescue. Trench rescue involves shoring up the sides of a trench, and digging a trapped worker out of a collapsed ditch. Trench rescue is one of the most dangerous rescue operations to complete."
We will detail trench rescue after the training is completed. Middletown has had it's share of issues regarding this type of work and rescue. Thank you for the question and the wikipedia details to some extent what trench rescue is.
Thanks for your reply. Glad to hear our town's firefighters are getting this training.
