From 1909: Wesleyan Sophomores Win Scrap

This article appeared in the Hartford Courant exactly 100 years ago today, on October 4, 1909.

Flag rushes were held at many institutions 100 years ago. There were sometimes elaborate rules for the rush, for example at RPI, Section 7 of the flag rush rules read, "The time of posting of the notice shall be reported by the Junior above mentioned to the referee and shall be the time of commencement of the rush and must be within the limits provided for in Article IV, Section I."

The sophomores sprung a huge joke on the freshmen and won the flag rush at Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, following the football game. The freshmen were six or so deep about the pole to which was nailed their colors, when the sophomores appeared with bags of flour and begun to toss the contents in the air.

"Close your eyes," yelled a wise freshmen. The guardians of the banner did, and Kidder, '12, calmly jumped on their backs and pulled down the flag before the freshmen had recovered from the surprise. It was the first time in the history of the scrap that sophomores have won, and the class of 1912 celebrated accordingly afterwards.
