5,217 Dead Honored in Middlefield

There is one flag to honor each of the 5,217 Americans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan (as of Thursday), displayed outside of The Congregational Church, on Main Street in Middlefield. It is a moving, powerful display, accompanied with a list of the names of all those who have died.

The Somers Congregational Church Memorial Garden Committee, which created what is called The Field of Flags display in October 2005, when 2,231 had died, wrote in their history:
"The field of flags is a silent, patriotic and poignant reminder of the cost of war. Each flag represents not simply one casualty, but all the family members and friends who have been touched by that life now gone."
