Janet
Brooks will discuss her recent trip to Central Europe, walking the European
Peace Walk from Austria through Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia this evening, November 16th, at 6:30pm in the Hubbard Room of the Russell Library.
The
walk was established in 2014 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of
the beginning of World War I. Janet will describe how she experienced the
“peace” in the peace walk. While the walkers walked north to south, refugees
traveled through Hungary from east to west, crossing into Austria through the
same village that the peace walkers had traversed. Barbed wire, having
disappeared, has re-emerged. There will be opportunities to ask about the nuts
and bolts of the walk, such as physical fitness, maps and walk guidance, and
backpack gear.
