There will be a gather at the South Green for an Evening of Awareness and Understanding of Shaken Baby Syndrome. September 15, 2009, 6 to 7 p.m. Rain Date September 22.
In Middletown, since February, three babies have been severely injured as a result of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS). SBS occurs when someone violently shakes an infant or young child, creating a whiplash type motion. Because infants and young children have not yet developed enough strength in their neck and shoulder muscles to sustain or resist the shaking, multiple traumas occur. In two of the cases here in Middletown, the children suffered life-threatening injuries which included bone fractures, retinal hemorrhaging and bleeding in the brain. The children now face a life time of challenges.
A group called the local Shaken Baby Syndrome Committee came together in an attempt to raise awareness of SBS and to reach as many moms, dads and caretakers as possible. “It is important to make people aware of the seriousness of this social issue.” says Kathy Novak, local organizer. Members of the group consist of South Church, Middlesex Hospital Family Advocacy, local Exchange Clubs, Children’s Trust Fund, Family School Connection at Bielefield School and Middletown’s Even Start Program. The group wants to get the word to as many people as possible.
The vigil will begin with refreshments and information tables. The audience can also hear from community leaders about this issue. There will also be a parent’s perspective of how SBS awareness has affected them. Lights will be distributed during a musical interlude at the end of the presentation in honor of and awareness of Shaken Babies.
