Around Middletown in 80 Days: Day 23

Wadsworth Mansion Long Hill Estate Long Hill Mansion Tour 2-4pm

From Phileas’ Journal:
Today I visited Long Hill Estate, home of the Wadsworth Mansion. It is a grand house in the old style, featuring classical architectural elements: Greek columns facing the approach to the mansion, Roman arches gracing a lovely palazzo in the back, and even a tiny replica of a Roman temple that is used for the gardener’s shed! The grounds are beautifully planted with trees of all kinds. Colonel Wadsworth, who built the mansion, took special care to make every vista delightful to the eye. I much admired the beautiful stonewalls, the sweeping drives, and the lush green lawn, which, I am told, is often the site of weddings and delightful parties of all kinds. I took advantage of the guided tour of the mansion, held every Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm. The docents were most learned, and able to answer every question put to them about the house, its history, and the illustrious Wadsworth family.
