Around Middletown in 80 Days: Day 28

Arrigoni Bridge

From Phileas's Journal:
Arching over the lazy waters of the Connecticut River, The Arrigoni Bridge, the great connection between Middletown and it's quiant neighbhor Portland, offers a most majestic view of Middletown! I was told by a passerby that the bridge, named for former State Senator Charles J. Arrigoni, was the longest of its kind when first built. In addition to it's lengthiness, the bridge was named "most beautiful steel bridge" by the American Institute Of Steel Construction when it first opened in 1938. Without this monumentous spectacle, travelers desiring to cross between the banks of the Connecticut River would require the assistance of a sturdy canoe (and a strong pair of arms) or an unhurried ferry. Personally, I prefer the convenience this passageway (I tend to be quite partial to shortcuts...). Besides, what a view!

I've always liked that Middletown people call it "the Portland bridge", and Portland people call it "the Middletown bridge". It bridges more than a physical gap.
