Williams writes mainly on modern Russian history but he has also published a biography of Horace Greeley (2006) and a book on the role of Klaus Fuchs in the development of the Russian atomic bomb (1987). His books on twentieth-century Russia include: Culture in exile: Russian émigrés in Germany, 1881-1941 (1972), Artists in Revolution: Portraits of the Russian avant-garde, 1905-1925 (1977), The Other Bolsheviks: Lenin and His Critics, 1904-14 (1986). His latest book is The Historian's Toolbox: A Student's Guide to the Theory and Craft of History (2007).
