Music This Weekend (Part 2): June 5 & 6

Busy weekend of music around town including 2 shows at Boney's Music Lounge, above Fishbone Cafe, 106 Court Street.

On Friday, bassist Joe Fonda comes back to town in a trio setting featuring saxophonist Charles Neville (pictured.) Neville, the second oldest of the New Orleans-based soul/funk/pop band, the Neville Brothers, was nurtured in the sounds of his native Crescent City, playing with numerous soul bands but is also adept at straight-ahead jazz. Chances are good that he and Fonda will hit all kinds of grooves in the three sets they are scheduled to play. The music starts at 8:30 p.m.

Blues guitarist and vocalist Debbie Davis takes the stage on Saturday night for a high-energy romp. The California native has been on the road for over 25 years and has developed into an hellacious player. along with bassist Casandra Faulconer and drummer Don Castagno, she's got an electric sound that really digs deep into the blues.

Music starts at 8:30 - you might want to call 346-6000 and see if they take reservations.

Meanwhile, The Buttonwood Tree will have a bit of a soul/gospel/r'n'b feel when Randy Moses plays "songs you can trust" Friday night at 7:30 p.m. After a stint in California in the 1980s playing (mostly) jazz, Moses returned to Middletown and formed the House of Moses band with brothers Fred and Thomas. This should be an evening of sweet sounds.

Saturday, singer/songwriter Rupert Wates performs "melodic art/folk" music in the Buttonwood's intimate performance space. Wates, born in London, England, has lived in the U.S. since 2006 and his music reflects his love of "Americana", the blend of folk, blues and country music that runs like a river through his original material.

Opening the show at 7:30 p.m.will be New Haven-based singer/songwriter Christina Harris. To find out more, go to www.myspace.com/cristinaharrismusic. For reservations, call 347-4957.
