Police To Target Seatbelt Scofflaws This Week

From the Middletown Police Department
--------------

As motorists take to the roads this Memorial Day holiday, city Police are urging everyone to buckle up. Beginning May 20, 2013 law enforcement officials will be out in full force, taking part in the 2013 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization and cracking down on motorists who are not belted.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 52 percent of the 21,253 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2011 were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. As noted, deaths involving seat belt nonuse are more prevalent at night than during the daytime. According to NHTSA, 62 percent of the 10,135 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2011 during the overnight hours of 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

In 2011, seat belts saved an estimated 11,949 lives nationwide according to NHTSA. While this year’s Click It or Ticket enforcement mobilization runs from May 20 through June 2, officers are out enforcing seat belt laws year-round.

Why not target cellphone use and texting they are the real public dangers. If I don't where a seatbelt no one else is in danger. A narcissistic moron behind the wheel texting is a danger to me and everyone else. What a waste of police resources.

Typical backwards approach. How about more enforcement of speeding and tailgating that cause most crashes? Then seatbelts wouldn't me as much of an issue. Seatbelt use doesn't do anything for the cyclist and pedestrians that are killed.

I think safety can be taken through a multi faceted approach. I think wearing seat belts does save lives (not sure why anyone would not want to wear one, but personally, I don't feel we need to pay if we opt out). The police will probably be ticketing people who speed (and hopefully those that tailgate).

As far as phones, people are definitely distracted using them - if they're on the roads or walking on a sidewalk. On the flip side, I can't tell you how many cops I've seen talking on the phones while driving. Is that what they use instead of radios these days (not sure)??

That's not true. Without being held in your seat during a quick maneuver to avoid an accident you unwilling loose control and cause one.

If you happen to get into an accident your death or serious injury harms all the people around you.
