This appeared all over Wesleyan's campus yesterday. Some students conjecture it is not the work of students. We deserve a Chipotle's. Indeed. Radicals! Anarchists! Consumerists!

a school known for free thinking and good debate is questioning ones free speech rights to post a flyer with an opinion? its a good thing steve devoto is in the biology dept.
rI agree that Wesleyan should have a new bookstore if they need it, but why not build it on campus. If the food is that bad on campus walk down to Main Street you have a great selection of meals there.
It's not a matter of them needing a new bookstore, Anonymous #2 - they think being a part of this developer's plan will somehow make them money, which I don't think is at all true; and for the university to allege that it's all in the interest of bettering relations with the community, tell that to the independent coffee shops which have been down right down the street for years. Moving the bookstore onto campus would be a sad thing for the town, as Broad Street is one of the few public bookstores in the area, period. I agree that the flyer looks like something someone "a little too allied" with the proposal might conjure up - the wording and everything is just over the top - "we need a chipotle and starbucks"?
is the discussion "the expansion and relocation of Broad Street Books" or the abandonment and vacating of Broad Street Books in favor of giant national chains?
Everything about that poster screams scam to me. What 18-22 year old Wes student is going to make some crappy flyer on Microsoft Word with bullet points? The lines of logic are pretty corporate too, not very consistent with what one would expect here. Indeed, there are always outliers, but I smell fish on this one. Fish tacos. Shitty, corporate fish tacos.
The developer is seeking "national-name vendors," and the fact they've named Starbucks as a definite, were it to go forward, would suggest they will try, before anything else, to get Barnes and Noble.
Which could very well mean, good luck Broad Street Books and Red & Black Cafe employees.
You already have an upgrade, it's called Main Street. I will protest vehemently against the pillaging of our local businesses for the profit of big corporations and wealthy universities. Boo.

Julian Schmidt is also in favor of the Washington Street development
I hope this poster is a joke...

Jon, so far it is the latter.
