Middlesex
Community College faculty, students and staff
gathered to plant the first herbs, perennials, and shrubs in the new Mabel
Burchard Fischer Grant Foundation sustainable garden in front of Founder's Hall
on the MxCC campus. Dic Wheeler, MxCC adjunct professor and co-director of
ARTFARM, is pictured here taking a break during the event, which was organized
by the College’s Sustainability Team.
The garden is one more
step towards creating a sustainable campus as outlined in the American College
& University Presidents’ Climate Commitment which the College signed last
April. Since then, MxCC has made major efforts
in promoting environmental education, awareness, recycling, and landscaping
projects on campus.
“At the
heart of our commitment to environmental stewardship and to the principles of
sustainable development is our plan to practice sustainability in the operation
of our buildings and grounds,” Dr. Ann Wasescha, MxCC president, said. “We are infusing sustainability across the
curriculum, and providing opportunities for our college community to engage in
activities outside the classroom. The
support for this garden is a wonderful illustration of the things we can
accomplish when working together.”
In all it does, Middlesex Community College strives to be the
college of its community. By providing high quality, affordable, and accessible
education to a diverse population, the college enhances the strengths of
individuals through degree, certificate, and lifelong learning programs that lead
to university transfer, employment, and an enriched awareness of our shared
responsibilities as global citizens. MxCC is committed to environmental
stewardship and to the principles of sustainable development.
