Genre-Defying Music and Workshops this Weekend at The Buttonwood Tree

InnerAttainment: "Music is the Healing Force of the Universe" - Friday July 13 at 8pm

InnerAttainment is a project that involves music, spoken word and poetry. The music is not in any one genre but includes African Rhythms, Jazz and Tone Poems. The group offers a musical meditation and soundscape that uses the healing power of spoken word, music and song. The group includes vocals, percussion (hand drums and small percussion instruments), woodwinds (saxophones, flutes) and other miscellaneous instruments. The emphasis is on the environment (air, water, trees, the sun and the stars) and the state of human beings and the world. The offering is a meditation for the healing of the mind, body and soul. It includes ritual that encourages the listener to relax and feel the positive vibration as the presentation unfolds. There are portions that encourage audience participation in order to enhance that “healing feeling”.
InnerAttaiment is Margaux Modimo (Vocals, Spoken Word, Percussion and Miscellaneous Instruments), Richard McGhee III (Saxophones, Flutes, Vocals and Miscellaneous Instruments). We would also include some special guests to enhance the vibrational atmosphere of the presentation.

Writing Workshop with Award-winning Writer- Saturday July 14 at 1pm

Writing What You Know (Or Don't Know)

This workshop with award-winning writer and former ABC and NPR journalist Eileen Albrizio will explore what it means to write what you know, then go outside the realm of our own experiences and write what we don’t know.
It’s a simple philosophy, write what you know—perhaps too simple. We are creative people and writing about only what we’ve experienced seems limiting. What does it actually mean anyway? How can you write a science fiction, horror or fantasy novel if what you write must be based on only what you’ve experience in real life? Then again, how do you write what you don’t know? Does that mean spending time and energy doing large amounts of research? The answer is simpler than you think. Writing what you know is actually a good philosophy, but it’s not the entire philosophy. It’s just the start.
Eileen Albrizio is an American writer of poetry and prose as well as a freelance proofreader and editor. Her works have appeared in numerous literary publications, including the Common Ground Review and the Underwood Review. She is the author of three volumes of poetry: Messy on the Inside, Rain – Dark as Water in Winter, and Perennials: New & Selected Poems, which was nominated for the 2008 CT Book Award.
