"Let's Dance" Presented By Middletown Chorale, November 21

Under the direction of Joseph D’Eugenio, Connecticut Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association 2009 Conductor of the Year, the Greater Middletown Chorale presents “Let’s Dance!” The Chorale is pleased to feature professional dancers from the studio of Arthur Murray-Hamden, who will perform featured dance presentations during the concert.

“This concert truly represents what the GMC is all about,” D’Eugenio said. “This is a chorus that offers quality choral music in concert along with special guest artists. Working with Kevin McHugh of Arthur Murray-Hamden on choosing choral arrangements that would inspire exciting ballroom dance choreography has been a fun experience.”

The concert features a collection of songs representing classic dance routines such as the tango and waltz. Featuring selections by George Bizet, Johannes Brahms, Alice Parker and Gwyneth Walker, the selection of music reflects the intricate connection between singing, dancing and rhythm, by also featuring dances from around the world.

“The program includes a wide range of music in terms of period, style, and genre,” D’Eugenio said. “It will open with George Bizet's 'Waltz for Chorus' to which the dancers will dance a Vienesse waltz while the chorus sings. Brahm's beautiful "Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes" will also be a featured portion of the program.  The waltzes will be sung by the Chorale's professional core of professional singers and will be accompanied by four-hands at the piano. Other music on the first half of the program includes Alice Parker's early-American "Green Dances," as well as a selection of dances influenced by cultures around the world.  The second half of the program is practically dedicated to the 'tango.'  The program will close with Carmen's 'Habanera,' from Bizet's opera Carmen, which will also be danced as a tango.”

The concert will be held on Sunday, November 21 at 4:00PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Portland. The chorale usually performs to a full audience, so advance ticket sales are suggested. Tickets may be ordered with PayPal or a credit card online at www.gmchorale.org. Directions to the concert are available on the Web site as well.
