Careful readers of my "This date in history" contributions will have noticed mistakes in other historical reprints as well. Remember this when you pine for those lost days of mistakes-free news reporting. They didn't exist.
Just to pile on further, the article actually describes the accident as occurring at 1:50 p.m. -- hardly the middle of the night, unless things were very different in 1937.
I channelled Policeman George Dunn to resolve this. It seems that the bicyclist was struck at 1:50pm as stated in the article. HOWEVER,Mr Stratton did have an "accident" at midnight as the night shift at the hospital was slow in providing a bedpan. Newspapers were less sensational in those days and didn't want to go into details about the "accident".
OMG....Thank you anonymous medium. I find mediums fascinating. I know this has nothing to do with the article but without mediums a lot of people would not have closure and I would not of had this very needed laugh in regards to the "accident".

Midnight? Not according to the story.

I think by "midnight" they mean "in the middle of the night." Which seems to make sense to me.
