DEEP TRAVEL BOOK DISCUSSION AND SIGNING

Are you a deep traveler? Do you find pleasure in viewing the natural world through a more humanistic lens? If so, join author David Leff on November 10^th at 7:00 PM in the Hubbard Room at Middletown’s Russell Library for a journey that goes deep rather than far.

Mr. Leff, a former deputy commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, explores the physical evidence of past lives, historic places and events, and how human innovation has changed the landscape along New England’s industrialized rivers. His interest is not simply nature in its pristine form, but exploring the much maligned landscape of old factory towns and abandoned mills, their dams and sluices, of eroded farm lands.

We'll begin our adventure with Henry David Thoreau on his epic trip along the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. But we'll also explore how our own ordinary journeys can probe the confluence of natural and cultural environments, how we can see the world in four dimensions, in time as well as space. Deep travel is about mindful looking, about journeys that go below the surface of the ordinary to find wonders hidden in plain sight.
