In This Corner, Dan Brown

Suzanne Elliot from The Russell Library sent the following release for your edification:

Dan Brown and the Conflict Between the Catholic Church and Science

Author and Professor Dr. Eric Plumer will present this symposium on Saturday, November 7, 2pm in the Hubbard Room at Russell Library 123 Broad Street, Middletown 06457. The lecture will start with Galileo, a figure of particular interest as 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of his first use of the telescope to the study the heavens. It will also include the story of how a young Catholic priest corrected Einstein on his general theory of relativity and eventually won Einstein over. The talk will end with controversies surrounding the Church and science today.

Plumer’s most recent book, The Catholic Church and American Culture: Why the Claims of Dan Brown Strike a Chord, not only explores the reasons for the appeal of the claims found in The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, it also provides a context for understanding the third of Dan Brown’s “Robert Langdon” novels, The Lost Symbol.

Eric Plumer holds degrees in theology from Oxford University and the University of Notre Dame, and has taught at both of those universities. He currently teaches at the University of Scranton. Copies of Plumer’s latest book The Catholic Church and American Culture: Why the Claims of Dan Brown Strike a Chord will be available for purchase and signing.

The event is free and open to the public.
