Our newly elected public officials will be sworn in tomorrow, and the Middletown Eye thought it would be appropriate to send our officials an open letter with practical requests and suggestions about the issues, problems and goals they should focus on in the next few years.
If you have a suggestion, please send it to the Middletown Eye for publication this Wednesday.

Work together.
Concerned City Resident
I would love to see the Westfield bicycle and pedestrian path completed downtown. Not a recreational loop, but a real way to get from one place to the other, especially during rush hours.
The short section from the Newfield St. / Westfield St. intersection, across the rivers, rails, and Rts 3 & 66 intersection into downtown would be a fantastic start.
The one thing I hope that these new (and old) officials will always keep in the forefront of their minds is not to let the ongoing economic crisis tempt them to make hasty decisions that only affect the short term bottom line. We have more than our fair share of pharmacies and discount stores. Do more to help real small business start-ups and struggling new businesses. Ensure that Middletown remains the coolest city in CT!
Hearing the candidates at a campaign event left me the impression that both sides had good ideas/reasonable points in their arguments, and that the dispute over the city's budget was not something that should have been resolved with a veto and an override of the veto. Neither side appeared willing to compromise much. Both sides need to work together.
It is also apparent that some people are unhappy with (perceived or real) limited transparency in how decisions are made and limited input/feedback from the public. Better communication between gov't and the public should be fostered.
Dear Concerned:
Nice thought.
It will NEVER happen.
I wish that the council will work together, too, and maybe that will "never" happen, but maybe if we set up that expectation, it "might" happen.
I also wish for transparency in govt and evidence that you all are worthy public officials who believe in the principles of democracy, serving all of us, not just your buddies or your own little agendas. Actions speak louder than campaign promises.
