The Cypress Restaurant & Grill has been a mainstay on South Main Street since the Carta family opened the doors in 1936 (about the time of this photograph.) In the days before Route 91, Route 17 was the main road to New Haven and the Cypress was a "hopping" place for sojourners on their way up to the Capital City or down to New York.
There have been a number of changes to the premises over the years but the Cartas still own and operate the establishment. They opened a patio in 1997 off the back door and overlooking the small pond and, in the summer and early autumn, have entertainment 1 or 2 evenings a week.
Tonight (Thursday), they welcome vocalist/guitarist Victor Cowles (pictured left) who will perform folk favorites from 7 - 9 p.m. on the patio. Friday evening at 8 p.m., it's the "down-home" sound of Swamp Stomp. Looks like the weather will be pleasant over the next few nights so taking in some live music could be a pleasant diversion.
