From DeLauro's office.
Our Congresswoman, Rosa DeLauro, will host a discussion on the impact of the increasing cost of higher education this Monday, June 24 at 1:00 p.m., in the DeKoven House Community Center on Washington Street. She will join local parents and students, who will talk about how the pending increase in the student loan interest rate and federal cuts to higher education programs hurt middle class families.
Interest Rates Will Double July 1 without Congressional Action
If Congress fails to keep the student loan interest rate from doubling to 6.8 percent by July 1, more than seven million students will see their repayment costs increase by $4.3 billion, making college $1,000 more expensive for each borrower every year. This increase is on top of the cuts from the indiscriminate, harmful sequestration cuts, and proposed cuts in the Republican Budget.
DeLauro voted against a bill that would have increased the cost of college and has called for Republicans to bring forward a bill that responsibly deals with the looming increase. DeLauro is the senior Democrat on the subcommittee responsible for funding the education department.
