On 5/11/10, at 2059 hours, Middletown Officers responded to 220 Newfield Street, Apartment 812 to conduct a well being check of the resident, Lori Fappiano. While in route, Officers received information that she may be in possession of a firearm.
Officers believing that Fappiano may be armed, tactically approached her door. From the hallway, Officers repeatedly knocked and announced that the Middletown Police was at the door and asking Fappiano to open the door to speak with Police. Officers heard someone moving from within the apartment and repeatedly knocked and announced their presence. The announcement was made in such a manner that other residents on the eighth floor reported hearing the police.
The Patrol Sergeant and the three other responding Officers flanked both sides of the door. As they pushed the door opened, they saw Fappiano standing in the apartment in what appeared to be a shooting stance, pointing a firearm at them. The officers began to retreat. As they were trying to get away from the doorway, Fappiano fired a shot at the officers. The bullet struck the inside portion of her door, penetrating and lodging into a welcome sign on the door to the apartment directly across the hall from hers. There was a single male occupant located in the apartment across from Fappiano’s, who stated he had heard the police knock and announce, and who was looking out the peep hole from his door, and witnessed Fappiano shoot at the four Police Officers. The Officers were subsequently able to order Fappiano from the apartment and take her into custody after a minor struggle. No one was injured as result of the shooting.
Lori Fappiano was placed under arrest and transported to Middletown Headquarters where she was charged with 4 counts of Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, Criminal use of a Firearm, Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm and Refusal to be Fingerprinted. Fappiano is being held on a $1,000,000.00 bond, and is scheduled to appear at Middlesex Superior court on 5/12/10.

The police should have fired back.
I am related to her. She is bipolar and was off her medication. Your comment is cruel.
the problem is the public wants to reduce taxes...
so instead of wealthy politicians taking a cut; they cut services.
This is the way it is people, if you want services cut to the most needy.
DCF shut down a residential treatment facility in Hamden but did nothing to reduce their administrative costs.
Where do you think the children are that need these services?
Same with services to the mentally ill and addicted.....
People need to speak out against coaches of state colleges making over 100k while services to the neediest are being eliminated!
I grew up with Lori, what happened to her to make her do something like that?? Does she have any family left that can help her? She really is in a lot of trouble right now. I hope she get the help she needs. Lori growing up was a very pretty, funny, competetive young woman.
