An Open Letter From Mayor Giuliano

This past week has been a difficult period for the people of Middletown but it was also a clear example of why our city and its families are so special.

Last Sunday morning almost the entire city woke up to homes without power. While half of those residents had their power restored in 72 hours, too many of us did not have their electricity until nearly a week later.

Storm Alfred was different from any in recent history. We witnessed and lived the devastating effects of falling trees, snapped utility poles and other debris which challenged our city fire, police, emergency medical and city crews.

The result was thousands of our citizens, young and old, left in the dark, in cold temperatures, unable to cook and in many cases unable to operate indoor plumbing. The damage to personal and public property has yet to be calculated, but thankfully there were no greater losses.

But through these challenges emerged the best of Middletown’s spirit, as I traveled the city to ensure the deployment of critical services and emergency response activities, I witnessed countless examples of neighbor helping neighbor. Our police, fire, and ambulance personnel were tireless. The volunteers at the shelters have been extraordinary.

I can tell you that while I have always been proud of the people of Middletown, I have never been more proud than I was this past week.

So again – thank you. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to help get us through. You are the backbone and the spirit of this wonderful city. God Bless you all.

Very sincerely,

Sebastian N. Giuliano

Over these last 6 years I have watched the City of Middletown work. In the past I have watched dilatory practices that prevented the city from working properly. Street gangs prevented locals from shopping at traditional neighborhood markets, drug dealers wandered the streets at will and cars broken into endlessly. The attitude was to cede the urban center to decay and crime. Members of the Public Safety Committee refused phone calls and acted as if the north enders were cranks refusing to accept diversity. Poltroonery and cowardice abounded. The frustrations we felt in having our neighborhood taken from us while the city government stood by and did nothing was appalling. We cannot return to those days of ineffective government and urban decay. While Dan Drew may be a nice person I have never seen him in the north end. In fact the last democratic mayoral candidate to be in the north end was Maria Holzberg. The last democrat I voted for. On Tuesday we need to vote for demonstrated experience and that is Seb Giuliano.
