HUSBAND AND WIFE WIN BEST OVERALL IN 9th ANNUAL MxCC $CHOLARSHIP 5K



Brian Nelson and Lisa Nelson (pictured above, right), a husband-and-wife running “team” from Rockville, Conn., won the men’s and women’s titles in the ninth annual MxCC $cholarship 5K held Saturday, October 29. In winning the Overall Open Championship, Brian Nelson, 31, set a new record time for the course: 16 minutes, 32 seconds, smashing the previous record of 17:11 held by Brendan Atkin of Old Lyme.

The Nelsons were joined on the Middlesex Community College campus by hundreds of other runners and walkers, spectators and supporters. The race event raised more than $24,000, which supports student scholarships and programs at MxCC.

Winner from the MxCC faculty and staff was Matt Weber, professor of Fine Arts, of Unionville, Conn., with a time of 22:45. Awards were also given to the top winners in the following categories:

For the first time, the race included a “pace car,” sponsored by Liberty Bank. The vehicle, a Jeep Liberty, was driven by Garrett Birdsey, MxCC Foundation treasurer and manager of Liberty Bank’s Higganum office. Birdsey ceremoniously started the race in the Jeep ahead of the runners, and set the pace for all competitors. The course followed a scenic out-and-back route, with some small rolling hills along the way, and a downhill finish in the reservoir area surrounding the community college campus.

Lead sponsor of the event was the Peach Pit Foundation. Other sponsors and donors included Liberty Bank, Webster Bank, People’s United Bank, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, First Niagara Bank, the Teamsters Union local 1150, and Middle Oak Insurance.
