CHC Launches National Music Video Campaign featuring local Macdonaugh Students

From the CHC Press Release:

Recess Rocks Launches National Music Video to Fight Childhood Obesity

Recess Rocks has teamed up with Steve Roslonek of PBS Kids’ popular show “SteveSongs” to produce an energetic Recess Rocks theme song and music video, designed to spur kids into action. The music video as well as other Recess Rocks resources, blend a variety of aerobic movements—like kickboxing, African drumming and yoga— with upbeat, energizing music. The sustained-activity programs can be used at school to get kids fit, sharpen young minds, encourage natural “feel-good” energy, build self-esteem and nurture lifelong healthy habits.
Community Health Center, Inc. (CHC) developed Recess Rocks – a national program to reverse childhood obesity and to redefine and redesign how recess is incorporated into the school day. Recess Rocks is a free, dynamic movement program for elementary school children that can be adapted to any part of the school day. It brings fun, non-competitive aerobic exercise and kinesthetic learning into the classroom and beyond.

Download the theme song from iTunes. Visit www.RecessRocks.com to watch the music video and learn more about how to get started with Recess Rocks in your community.

Recess Rocks is a program of the Community Health Center, Inc.

This is just fantastic. Major kudos to the folks at CHC who made this happen.

Are there any studies to support the idea that behavior problems decrease if kids are allowed to move around a little during the day?

Anyway, great work, CHC.

I read in the Hartford Courant that Mayor Drew reached a settlement with the Middletown Police Union. This is another fine example of Mayor Drew's leadership instead of costly lawsuits like Former Mayor Giuliano would have done.

Hate to the the sore loser....but why not feature a school other than MacD? There are seven other schools in town. Why not feature children from the entire system?

Anon 4:55- what does that have anything to do with this blog post???

That was a great video. Didn't the performer come to Middletown for the "Middnight On Main Street" celebration on Dec. 31, 2011 and possibly last summer too? I think I may have seen a video of him performing in front of the Holy Trinity Church that was on the Middletown Patch website last summer. Does any one know?

Yes its Steve Songs. He did a special Midnight on Main Song

Why MacDonough and not the other schools? He's a Wesleyan graduate and lives in CT and his friends are all North End people. Farm Hill could have used some good publicity but that wasn't in the plan.

The video was filmed at Macdonough but children from all 8 Middletown elementary schools were in the video!

Half of the North End goes to Farm Hill. As much as I love to see NEAT doing great things for the North End, I wonder why not spread the love? You are part of Middletown, right? Your children aren't at MacD forever. Why not the MHA properties, or the Carabetta areas? And have you seen the East Main area lately?

I would like to clarify. NEAT had nothing to do with the Recess Rocks video.

It was produced entirely by the Community Health Center, which created the program. Their decision to film on location at Macdonough was their choice.

NEAT does agree that our kids go to schools all over the district. We have a strong partnership with Macdonough, but are working for all of the schools.

Last night's NEAT meeting was focused on Farm Hill, and we had a meet and greet with the new interim principal, Mark Proffitt. Last month's general meeting was to educate parents on the process for applying to magnet schools.

To the extent that we can, we try to be involved in the middle and high schools, understanding that all of our kids attend. Our schools committee (which anyone can join) deals with issues at all of the elementary schools. We were active in redistricting because it affected kids from all over the city.

We care a great deal about the City of Middletown and are involved in numerous projects that benefit Middletown. Our staff have children at multiple schools and are proud to be residents here. As an organization, our mission is to serve the residents in the North End. As always, we encourage any group that is interested in other areas of the city to start similar projects and would be happy to offer advice and support.

Anon 4:55 -

Did you see the sun come up this morning? You can thank Dan Drew and Democrats for that...and for everything good that comes to Middletown.

The video was filmed at Mcd. School but included students from other schools in Middletown.

Honestly, folks? I don't understand this negativity. Here's a creative and positive project, a video featuring great music and happy kids -- and people write in to badmouth Mark Masselli, CHC, NEAT, and MacD, and to ask why other schools didn't get the "good publicity"?

If you want to have a project like this at your school, why not find out how? You can do that right in your own community. Fighting child obesity is a national concern, and no one is claiming ownership of the issue.

If only these negative comments really were about "sharing the love." More love and less bias and resentment would be good for all of us.
