And Molly Salafia and the Middletown Eye continue their descent into disrepute.

If I want to read Republican talking points, I'll turn on Fox News.

I find it offensive that senior citizens are portrayed as useless, drains on the healthcare system.

Pricilla, I'm sorry but in no way does my illustration portray that or make any comment about health care. I deeply value my elderly relatives and am very insulted that it is suggested that after a life time of good citizenship someone would suggest that they still owe a debt to society and need to got out and serve the community in order for them to ensure they make ends meet. Middletown should be serving its seniors not the other way around.

Molly,

Your drawing implied that seniors have so many health problems (listing many maladies and showing the senior with a walker) that they are incapable of providing any community service.

This tells the truth that Dan Drew wants seniors "mind you they have worked all their lives already", and now wants them to volunteer to get tax breaks. If they want to volunteer that is their decision but it should not be tied to getting tax breaks. Many seniors live on a fixed income and the tax break should be a given if they meet the income qualification.

My grandmother is 87 year old and bed ridden with all of those health conditions and more. If she had her health I am sure she would love to volunteer. What do you feel is an appropriate task for her to volunteer doing? She could sure use the tax break too.
My other grandmother in her 80's volunteers weekly in her home town because she loves doing it, as do I and we do not get anything other than enjoyment from it. I am perfectly aware of the varying degrees of health of person's over 65.
Not all seniors I know are in bad health, some are perfectly capable and willing to help out- should it be an obligation and expected- no-
My grandmother is not useless, or a drain on the healthcare system, and again implying that I am implying that is cruel & mean spirited- I would rather she be home safe enjoying her elder years than out stuffing envelopes or doing whatever would be appropriate for her health condition- Middletown should honor and serve the seniors not the other way around-
I for one would rather give seniors a tax break with no strings attached rather than a conditional one.
The list of health care issues, life accomplishments, and historical reference to the 3 major wars is to illustrate the fact that senior's have paid their dues as far as moral and literal obligations to make the younger generations lives better; in no way did I say they were useless, I am saying and showing that person's over 65 should be honored for their achievements and rewarded, not saddled with more work that is disproportionate to the so called break society would be giving them.
Before more rumors are spread about me that I am anti senior or anti Wes student...
I also never ever implied Wesleyan students should not vote. In my letter I state that I encouraged Wesleyan participation in the community, and they like any other voter should research and know the issues before voting. I don't condone anyone saying I said otherwise. The misinterpretation of my written words is astounding and disappointing.

There is no crime in showing an elderly person drawn with signs of aging that some elderly people have so that the viewer identifies them as older.

I have been involved in organizing many volunteer opportunities around Middletown, CANstruction who did a fund raiser with ColdStone is one, I met you and thought you a lovely person and an asset to the community. I would have hoped you would have thought me a sincere person as well & someone who would never call seniors "useless". I am involved with many able bodied senior citizens and we together volunteer via Kiwanis Club.

As a candidate and cartoonist I will take the heat for my actions, but I won't sit by when people throw me under the bus for criticizing the politics or governing bodies of Middletown or otherwise in ways that are not true. Other people dish out their opinions too, so I should be allowed to do the same.

Maybe kids should volunteer so their parents can get tax breaks!! Surely then someone would be offended that kids are useless drains!
