What The Courant's Police Chief Story Didn't Say

Middletown's inability to select a permanent Police Chief made front page headlines this morning in the Hartford Courant.

What the story didn't say is that there is a move to get the selection of Police Chief on the November ballot as a referendum item.

As reported previously here, a proposed petition to move the resolution rejected by the Common Council has been approved by the Middletown Town Clerk's office.  A Facebook group, Let the Public Decide has been created, and signatures will begin to be collected on July 1.

Talk about self serving!

But you must have been served too, or you wouldn't have read and commented!?

The people of Middletown do NOT know how to vote. They vote by name recognition. That is obvious by the City Council, or shall it be said lack of one. The City Council is split (Democrats vs Republicans), and splintered (no way to reconstruct) without complete replacement (vote the bums out). Call your local coucilman and tell him to get the politics out of his decision.

Ed wake up and smell the coffee the citizens of Middletown do not want McMahon as chief; we hope this goes to referendum and shuts up people like yourself for good!

One way to find out, I guess. But don't count on it shutting me up. Nothing's worked so far.

BTW, it's not coffee I'm smelling. And if it were, Starbucks would be out of business.

McMahon needs to know when to hold em and when to fold em, and in this case he is one hand over-due; should not have listened to the mayor and doubled down. Now he is a lame duck and a lightening rod and the issue is devisive and this no good for anyone. It isn't going to help us to pull this community apart to take it to referendum.

If the chief is truly a man of integrity and skill, then he has other options in other communities. Go find a town that will appreciate him and where he will be able to do a good job without controversy swirling around him forever.

It's time to let it go. And I don't like having to say that. I don't like that this happened. It is just a sad by product of Middletown's political mess.

The more important and valuable effort is to educate voters and get rid of the dead political wood. The gool ol' boys have got to go and the Democratic Town Committee should be the ones forcing the graceful retirement of those who are Aging beyond their usefulness.

To anonymous who stated Middletown citizens do NOT want McMahon:

There are those of us who DO want McMahon as our Police Chief. I will ask you here to please refrain from trying to appear as if you speak for ALL of us. You do NOT. Personally, I would never have such rudeness as your closing comment represent me.

McMahon and his team of officers seemed to be the ONLY ones for months that tried to stay on top of a bullying situation at WWMS.

My family is very grateful for his concern and effective guidance.

the sad part is if it was another mayor making the request, this would be a done deal. It happened with Brymer, but Thornton was their own, so no one objected that he came each day from East Hartford. Past precedence is key in this issue.
