Meet Your Greens - Nature As Nurturer and Sustainability

It's time to say Cheers to 2011!

Join us at Tavern at the Armory

January 18, 2011

5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Biomimicry:

Nature as Nurturer of Sustainable Design and Living

Biomimicry is 'innovation inspired by nature,' according to Janine Benyus, who in 1997 wrote the book bearing the same title. "In the years since its publication, many are learning that the sustainable path for living on the planet will be found through 'models, mentors, and measures' such as nature provides," according to Architect Randall Anway . "We can look at the inspiration nature abundantly shares and develop new ways to notice and enjoy this abundance in our daily lives."

Randall is principal at New Tapestry, LLC, a new firm dedicated to sustainable design in the built environment. He is active in the growing global community of 'biomimeticists' and also carries certifications in green and sustainable design and new urbanist principles (Smart Growth). Along with his informal talk, Randall promises there will either be "an unreasonable quiz or an edifying activity depending on a whim of the moment-- and special prizes for good sports."

Welcome back...and join us to catch up with old friends, meet new faces and launch another year of Meet Your Greens!

September 21, 2010

5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

the cardinals nest Church St., Middletown

Tom Christopher, landscape sustainability consultant, speaker and writer for 20 years will be our guest speaker. Tom, a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden's School of Professional Horticulture, is a former garden columnist for Horticulture and House & Garden magazine and a contributing editor at Martha Stewart Living. He has also contributed to NYBG's Green Perspectives blog. Tom will share his recent work experimenting with low mow/low fertilizer/no pesticide lawns.

"Lawns are the low hanging fruit when it comes to improving your sustainability and reducing your carbon footprint. Some turfgrasses recently released on to the market can provide an acceptable lawn while demanding only 1/4 or less as much mowing as conventional turfs, and which thrive in most situations in Connecticut with no summertime irrigation and little or no fertilization.”

Meet Your Greens - CT Yankee Conservation Project

Meet Your Greens—Middlesex County green drinks

Join us at La Vita Gustosa

June 15, 2010 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Coming Full Circle: The CT Yankee Conservation Project

Come hear about efforts to conserve one of our region's most extraordinary natural resources-- the site of a former nuclear power plant.

One year after Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company requested "Expressions of Interest" for its 582 -acre former power plant site in Haddam, the Connecticut Yankee Conservation Project formed to work with the conservation community and Connecticut Yankee in reaching an agreement to conserve the property. The area comprises over 3 miles of river frontage on both the Salmon and Connecticut rivers, and numerous noteworthy historic and archeological sites. With the recently decommissioned and completely dismantled nuclear power plant gone from its 30- acre location along the Connecticut River, a rare opportunity now exists to protect this magnificent property for long term public benefit. CYCP representatives will join us to give an overview of their goals and talk about their progress to date .

La Vita Gustosa

Located on Main Street in East Haddam, La Vita Gustosa (Italian for "the tasty life") is Chef Lorenzo and Jacqueline Cacace's family-owned, traditional Italian trattoria serving wholesome, home-cooked meals -" a reflection of our passion, loyalty and love... and the realization of our dream."

Deregualtion demystified....
Deregulation allows for companies other than the public utilities to offer electric power to consumers. This allows for competition that can lower prices. It's a brave new world of choice!
This month, Jim Sweeney,of HomeTronics Lifestyles, will be talking about deregulation and how it affects your electricity generation choices. Jim will suggest how to save up to 20% on the generation portion of your bill. You can even bring your electric bill to review. HomeTronics Lifestyles provides home technology services, and installs and services energy management systems, solar thermal and lighting control. Jim serves as a board member on the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Fairfield County and is a Certified Green Professional (CGP) from the National Association of Home Builders. He is also co-founder of The Green Team CT, which believes that, "green-built homes help our planet, and that using sustainable and renewable resources is the responsible thing to do."

And hear about CCEJ...
CCEJ logoWe will also have a chance to meet Martha Kelly of theConnecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice. Martha will speak briefly on what CCEJ is about and its mission to protect urban environments throughout the state.
