The Rockfall Foundation's "Meet Your Greens" Program is Back!

Meet Your Greens is back!
With COVID-19 restrictions being lifted, we are excited to see you again in person and resume our Meet Your Greens program! This will be the first of four Meet Your Greens events in 2021.
Join The Rockfall Foundation on Thursday, June 17 at 5:30 at Cinder + Salt with speaker Rosemary Ostfeld. “Food For You and The Planet” is a talk about the connection between our food choices and the environment. Rosemary will give us bite-sized actions to take to eat sustainably and support our local farming community.

Rosemary is the founder of Healthy PlanEat, an online platform where people can order food directly from local farmers that use sustainable growing practices and local food artisans. Rosemary also teaches at Wesleyan University in the College of the Environment and Patricelli Center for Social Entrepreneurship.
We will meet on Cinder + Salt’s back patio under an open-sided tent. Plan to arrive around 5:30, with the speaker beginning at 5:45. Bring your own food & drink. Free to participate.
Face masks are required if you are not fully vaccinated.
If you are fully vaccinated, face masks are optional throughout the program.

ROCKFALL FOUNDATION TO DISCUSS LOCAL FOOD (IN)SECURITY

Some learned names will be discussing the future of food resources in Middlesex County tomorrow.

The Rockfall Foundation will hold its annual symposium at "The Kate" in Old Saybrook. This year the environmentally-focused foundation, headquartered on DeKoven Drive, will examine "Our Future Food Security: National Issues, Local Response".

Symposium Chair Christine Nelson said "We've been hearing more about hunger [in Middlesex County]. It's not starvation, but there are issues with hunger." Too many of them involve children, who may suffer consequences from even a short period of malnutrition. "You only develop once" said Nelson. But, she also noted, "We have an agricultural legacy we really could capitalize on again."

To discuss how Middlesex County can create our own 'healthful, sustainable food system and maximize community self-reliance', the Rockfall Foundation has invited Mark Winne, a community food activist, writer, author and co-founder of the Connecticut Food Policy Council.

His keynote address will be followed by a panel discussion among Nicole Berube, Exec. Director at City Seed, New Haven and a member of the New Haven Food Policy Council; David Zemelsky, co-owner at Star Light Gardens in Durham; John Guszkowski, Director of Planning CME Associates and CEO at Eastern CT Resource Conservation & Development Area, Inc., and Middletown's own Izzi Greenberg, Exec. Director of NEAT and manager of the North End Farmers' Market. The discussion will be moderated by the Hartford Courant's Susan Campbell.

The program begins at 8:30am and runs until noon. Cost is $50. An optional lunch follows.

Postponed until a future date--and some thawing

Given the amount of snow we received and very cold temperatures predicted for the rest of the week, parking and driving for many of us will remain troublesome for a while. Our on-the-ground scouts recommend that we look for warmer days to reschedule and we will.

We look forward to setting another date--please keep safe and warm until then.

Meet Your Greens - Nature As Nurturer and Sustainability

It's time to say Cheers to 2011!

Join us at Tavern at the Armory

January 18, 2011

5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Biomimicry:

Nature as Nurturer of Sustainable Design and Living

Biomimicry is 'innovation inspired by nature,' according to Janine Benyus, who in 1997 wrote the book bearing the same title. "In the years since its publication, many are learning that the sustainable path for living on the planet will be found through 'models, mentors, and measures' such as nature provides," according to Architect Randall Anway . "We can look at the inspiration nature abundantly shares and develop new ways to notice and enjoy this abundance in our daily lives."

Randall is principal at New Tapestry, LLC, a new firm dedicated to sustainable design in the built environment. He is active in the growing global community of 'biomimeticists' and also carries certifications in green and sustainable design and new urbanist principles (Smart Growth). Along with his informal talk, Randall promises there will either be "an unreasonable quiz or an edifying activity depending on a whim of the moment-- and special prizes for good sports."

Tavern at the Armory

Located in the Inn at Middletown in a former National Guard Armory, the award-winning Tavern serves traditional regional and seasonal New England cuisine. Enjoy beer and wine specials!
