NEW COVID-19 BOOSTER SHOTS ELIBILITY FOR EVERYONE AGES 18 & ABOVE

NEW COVID-19 BOOSTER SHOTS ELIGIBILITY FOR EVERYONE AGES 18 & ABOVE

On Friday, November 19, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration gave final approval for all adults ages 18 and above to get the COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot. All individuals from this age group who either received the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are eligible to get a booster six months after their second dose. People who received the Johnson & Johnson one shot vaccine are eligible at least two months after their dose. According to the Center For Disease Control & Prevention website it states, "The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authorization and CDC’s recommendation for use are critical next steps forward in our country’s booster program – a program which will help provide increased protection against COVID-19 disease and death."

The CDC is still encouraging people who have yet to get vaccinated from COVID-19 to get vaccinated to protect themselves, their relatives, friends, co-workers, neighbors and their communities from contracting the disease. They are also recommending people who have underlying medical conditions and the elderly to get boosted before the holidays.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky stated "After critical scientific evaluation, today’s unanimous decision carefully considered the current state of the pandemic, the latest vaccine effectiveness data over time, and review of safety data from people who have already received a COVID-19 primary vaccine series and booster. Booster shots have demonstrated the ability to safely increase people’s protection against infection and severe outcomes and are an important public health tool to strengthen our defenses against the virus as we enter the winter holidays. Based on the compelling evidence, all adults over 18 should now have equitable access to a COVID-19 booster dose.”

Presently, people age 5 and up are eligible to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.  Children ages 5 to 18 are able to get vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.  The dose for children from ages 5 to 11 is a smaller dose than the one adults receive.  Children ages 12 and older receive the same dose that adults get.
