Kidcity Children's Museum (119 Washington St. in Middletown) will be hosting the non-profit organization Crayons For Cancer this Saturday, 3/20, from 9am - 5 pm. Bring in your old crayons and donate them to Crayons for Cancer and Kidcity will give you one free admission.
Crayons for Cancer was founded in the fall of 2008 to raise funds for the Oncology Unit at Connecticut Children's Medical Center (CCMC) in Hartford. Old crayons are collected, peeled, melted into new shapes and sold. Then six-year-old Emily Christensen had the original idea as a tribute to a friend of hers who had died of cancer shortly before his 4th birthday.
"Crayons for Cancer’s mission is to be passionately committed to helping ease the financial burdens of families whose children are currently suffering from the devastating effects of cancer. Our goal is to raise money by selling fun and cute-shaped crayons to replenish Family Funds and Treasure Chests at children’s hospitals nationwide while teaching children the value of helping others."
To date, more than $16,000 has been raised, and two other chapters of the organization have opened in Minneapolis, MN and Providence, RI. Many local schools and businesses in CT have donated crayons or hosted "crayon parties," and it's a fun way to recycle used crayons while making a very real difference for a child battling cancer.
