From the Middletown Police Department
On December 1, 2009 at approximately 1245pm, a passenger car collided with an unmarked police car on Randolph Road at the entrance to Xavier High School.
The investigation indicates that a 1991 Ford Mustang, traveling westbound on Randolph Road crossed the centerline and sideswiped the police car, which was traveling eastbound on Randolph Road.
The driver of the police vehicle, Sergeant Richard Spencer, was extricated by South District Fire Department personnel and he was subsequently transported by Hunters Ambulance Service to Middlesex Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
The investigation indicates that the operator of the Mustang, William Perkins of Middletown, age 31, looked away from the roadway and failed to see traffic that was stopped in front of him. In order to avoid a rear end collision, Mr. Perkins steered to the left and crossed the centerline, resulting in the collision.
Mr. Perkins was subsequently charged with Operating Under Suspension, Failure to have insurance, Operating an unregistered motor vehicle, Traveling too fast for conditions, and Distracted Driving.
He was released on his written promise to appear in court on 12-09-09.
