Police Posted At School Administration Building to Prevent Removal of Potential Evidence in Investigation

In a phone interview Saturday, Mayor Sebastian Giuliano confirmed that a police guard had been posted at the Middletown School Administration Building Saturday.

"The Common Council has ordered an investigation at Thursday's meeting," Giuliano said.  "We just want to be sure that nothing leaves the building."

Giuliano said the guard would be on duty as long as necessary.

An unmarked Middletown Police car was parked outside the school most of the day Saturday.

A reliable source who wished to remain unnamed, said that school administration employees, who were working in the building Saturday, had been escorted out and taken to Middletown police headquarters to be questioned about their activities at the building.

At Thursday's budget meeting of the Common Council there was great concern about accusations of financial malfeasance presented to individual Council members by central office employees.  Council members also expressed dismay at reports of mistreatment of employees by administration officials.  An official from Local 466 explained that there are eight open complaints against the school administration before the State Labor Commission.

Commissions called for an audit of school board finances and for a special investigation into the complaints of employees against the administration.  Mayor Sebastian Giuliano told the Common Council that he would begin the investigation, and initiate the audit as soon as possible.

Eight cases of what? Beer? Sounds like a good time to me. And I agree with poster #1....in these economic times where everyone is either giving up raises or losing their jobs (except 466 members, who are apparently above the rest) I don't think spending our tax dollars on all the legal fees that this will cost is appreciated by anyone. As a Middletown resident I urge the community to get involved and stop this Mayor from abusing any more funds! Isn't his Finance guy under arrest???? So we're going after our educators because why?!? Would LOVE to hear how this one started.

To the person attacking 466 members. Get your factS straight, the 466 contract expires on June 30, 2010....WE ARE NOT GETTING A RAISE.

It's a good thing that the police are watching the main entrance. I don't suppose there's another exit (or maybe even a paper shredder inside). What a joke and waste of taxpayer's money!

You thank the mayor sarcastically believing its a bad thing? I guess you're made of money and you don't care where the tax dollars go or you just don't have a clue as to what's really going on. Do you turn a blind eye and a deaf ear? There is a lot of money in question, not a few dollars here and there. How come you didn't thank the Common Council too? According to the Superintendant, it's about control. Those were the words that he spoke. He didn't say it's about the children or education, he said control. I say congratulations something is finally being done.

City Unions such as MMPA and 466 made/will make concessions this fiscal year and last - which means giving up something boys and girls- Some facts:

1.Because of concessions they will not get raises this year nor did they last year.

2.Because of concessions,they pay more for health insurance premium wise, and co pay wise.
Retirees pay for health insurance should they continue to take it
No tax payer money is put into pension funds. Again not free.

3.Despite urban myths, is no free lunch or coffee for City employees. There is no secret cafeteria in the basement- there are cash-money vending machines in city hall & a coffee pot upstairs that city employees bring in their own coffee and cups for.

4. There is no flex time, and all but necessary over time for police and emergency staff, not including plow drivers, has been cut from budget last year and this year.

5. On average, office employees work 8:30- 4:30 with a 1 hour lunch break and a 15 min morning coffee break. And its never been any more than that. That's a full day.

6. City vehicles are used for city business only, and anyone who violates this is disciplined.

Taxpayers get a full days work out of the employees; who's salaries are generally lower than that of the private sector equivalent, although in exchange for this lower wage, and union dues, unions bargain against lay offs and are sometimes successful. They call it "collective bargaining." Saturday and Sunday, also another perk brought to the public by Unions.

It is easy where in an recession those not in a union can be jealous of this protection and react with allegations of misconduct. Life is unfair, I'm sure everyone's job has its perks-
one of them being in a union is the ability to bargain to reduce lay offs-
