Oddfellows Playhouse 1st Annual Rubber Chicken Run

On Thursday, August 18 Oddfellows Playhouse will hold the First Annual Rubber Chicken Run, a 5K Cross Country race on the grounds of Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill Estate. The race is open to men and women ages 14 and up, as well as a children’s ½ mile Fun Run for children ages 13 and under. The Fun Run begins at 6 PM, and the 5K Cross Country race begins at 6:30 PM. The family friendly event features food from local vendors and live music from The 9th Wave surf band.

The Rubber Chicken Run is a fundraiser to support the high quality performing arts programs offered at Oddfellows Playhouse as well as scholarships to provide access for students of all means. The race is $20 per runner (age 14 and up) in advance, $25 per runner on the day of the race, and $75 per team of five runners. Teams must register before the day of the race and send their registration materials in together. Advanced registration closes August 12, 2011.

Oddfellows uses high quality arts programs, classes and performances to help young people ages 3 to 20 build self confidence and learn teamwork, cooperation and respect for others. It serves 2,000 students a year from 26 different communities throughout Connecticut.

flabby runners only? why is it called the rubber chicken run? I looked at the web site but don't see anything. It is attention-catching so maybe that is reason enough to call it that.

Here's what that font of information, Wikipedia says: "A popular sight gag and slapstick comedy prop, rubber chickens are sometimes used by comics as a mock weapon. They are also sometimes used by jugglers in place of clubs."

Oddfellows Playhouse is putting on The Rubber Chicken Run to raise money to replace props lost in the collapse of 505 Main St. over the winter. All costumes and props were lost.

As I vaguely recall, Groucho Marx had a game show in the 50s called "You Bet Your Life" in which, I think, a rubber chicken dropped from the rafters when...something happened.
