Walgreens Drive Through Application Approved

The Walgreens on the corner of Washington Street and West Street applied to Planning and Zoning for a special exception to have a drive-through pharmacy. The renovations will also provide a new brick façade, they will change the glass from darkened to see-through, and they will provide for bicycle parking. The plan elicited praise from the Commissioners for its improvements for traffic and handicapped access.

I was the only member of the public to comment on the proposal, requesting that bicycle access and parking be improved (for reasons which bewilder me, drug stores in Middletown have ridiculously narrow “sidewalks” between the store and the car parking, sometimes making it difficult to even lean a bike against the wall). The Walgreens representative said that the renovation would increase the “sidewalk” to 9’. Commissioner Michael Johnson went further proposed that Walgreen’s be required to include a bicycle rack outside the renovated store. Walgreens agreed, and the proposal for renovation was unanimously approved.
