Middletown Garden Club Recreates Russell Library Garden

The Middletown Garden Club is recreating the beloved flower garden at the corner of Broad and Court Streets, which was destroyed last year in the course of building repairs.  Club members Sally Cornish, Jennifer Saines, Kathy Green, Mary and Ted Xenelis, Kathy Stromm, Melissa Roberts and Maria Madsen Holzberg worked with Nancy DeBruhle, Jane Harris and the Russell Library Facilities staff to plan and implement the project. 

The Middletown Garden Club has a long history of contributing to the beautification of Russell Library—inside and out.  To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the Club is exhibiting panels throughout the Library that document the history of the Club and highlight their projects and activities through the years. Middletown Garden Club To Offer Plants At Wadsworth Mansion Open Air Market

The Middletown Garden Club will have a fall plant sale as part of the Wadsworth Mansion Open Air Market, Sunday, August 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Mansion, 421 Wadsworth St.

Admission to the Market is free and the event takes place rain or shine.

The club will be offering a variety of usual and unusual plants for the fall garden and landscape as well as divisions from members’ gardens. Shoppers can expect to find a selection of glorious perennials, including grasses and naturalizing mums. The club will also offer a selection of annuals for refreshing fall planters.

Bargain hunters should arrive early to shop the divisions section, where “tried and true” plants will be offered at a fraction of garden nursery prices. Club members will be on hand to offer advice on where to plant and what to expect from the divisions.

Whether you are adding to your fall landscape or planting with next year in mind, this sale is a must. Mid-August through mid-September brings perfect planting weather for many favorite New England plants.

Garden Club Meeting To Feature Tom Christopher Thursday

Noted gardening writer Tom Christopher will speak on Sustainable Gardening at an open meeting of the Middletown Garden Club, Thursday January 19, at 8:00 pm at the DeKoven House, Washington St and DeKoven Dr. The talk is free.

Tom Christopher has been reporting on gardening and environmental issues for more than twenty-five years, writing for a wide range of publications including the New York Times and Britain's Daily Telegraph, while serving as a columnist for magazines such as Martha Stewart Living and House & Garden. He is the author of Water-Wise Gardening, a guide to new styles of gardening emerging from the need to conserve this resource. He will have available copies of his latest book The Artful Garden and The New American Landscape:Leading Voices on the Future of Sustainable Gardening, a book he edited.

A graduate of the New York Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture, he contributes a blog about sustainable gardening, "Green Perspectives" to the botanical garden's website.

A Middletown resident, Tom’s backyard has always been his laboratory. He has installed a geothermal heating system for his house, and a cold frame to produce salad crops right through the New England winter. His landscaping includes low-input, high-yield species of flowers, shrubs, and trees.

GET READY FOR FALL GARDENING AT THE MIDDLETOWN GARDEN CLUB PLANT SALE

Middletown...The Middletown Garden Club will stage a fall plant sale as part of the Wadsworth Mansion Open Air Market, Sunday, August 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Mansion.

The club will be offering a variety of usual and unusual plants for the fall garden and landscape as well as bargain divisions from members’ gardens. Members will also take orders for a specially selected daffodil bulb collection and for their popular holiday amaryllis blooms.

Here in New England, gardeners wait patiently through the winter for the emergence of flowers, the greening of trees and the smell of freshly turned soil. When the earth finally awakens, they head out to their favorite garden centers and plant sales to purchase plants that will adorn their properties for the coming seasons. Many buy whatever is in flower, plant it, and call their work “done.” Their gardens are beautiful in spring and summer, but what about fall? Why not make this the year that you plant a glorious fall garden?
