Additional information / press release about the sneaker program:
Mayor Daniel Drew is pleased to announce the City of Middletown will be holding its tenth annual Reuse-a-Shoe Sneaker Recycling Drive.  Participants in the Reuse-a-Shoe program collect old athletic shoes (all brands) that are then recycled into a material called "NIKE Grind".  This recycled product is then used to produce a variety of athletic surfaces including basketball courts, running tracks and playground surfacing.

To participate, businesses or schools provide a collection box for used athletic shoes from employees, customers or students.  The collected sneakers can then be brought to the Middletown Recycling Center on the corner of Johnson St. and North Main St.  Individuals can also bring their old sneakers to the Recycling Center for recycling.
Important points to remember: Only athletic shoes (all brands) are accepted.  Nothing else!

No shoes with metal on them (eyelets, cleats or spikes)
Shoes must be kept dry. No wet shoes.
 Do not tie shoes together.
You must provide for delivery to the Middletown Recycling Center no later than June 18, 2012.
Sneakers can be brought directly to the Recycling Center during normal working hours (Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or Saturdays 7:00 a.m. – noon.)

If sneakers are still in wearable shape they can be donated to a non-profit that will sell or pass along your sneakers for others to wear:
 Goodwill also accepts non-sneakers.
Salvation Army sfalso accepts non-sneakers
Shoe4Africa  sneakers only
Soles4Souls  also accepts non-sneakers

If you have any questions, please call the Middletown Recycling Coordinator at 860-344-3526 or email her at kim.orourke@MiddletownCT.Gov

Very thankful for shred-fests (and Rx drug collection) in Middletown! And it looked as if lots of others were, too, on Saturday. Thank you all.
