Local State Senator Suzio Proposes Gas Tax Cap
Senator Suzio (R) represents the 13th District which includes part of Middletown
Article as it appeared on the website of WFSB3 on Jan 10, 2012 5:33 PM
Channel 3 (WFSB) – Like many drivers, State Sen. Leonard Suzio of Meriden is fed up paying the highest gas taxes in the country and the state.
“There’s no limit to it and as a consequence, as gas prices have gone up, Connecticut has been collecting a windfall,” Suzio said.
Suzio is introducing a proposal to cap the gross receipts tax on gas whenever prices hit $3 a gallon.
Right now, Connecticut is averaging $3.58. Residents can thank the state excise tax for 25 cents of that price, but gross receipts also makes up another quarter.
So if Suzio’s bill were to pass, he said the price at the pump today would drop by a nickel.
“It needs to be regulated. They need to start thinking about us as the people who are driving everyday, back and forth,” said resident Nick Bisaccia.
Any savings is a welcome sight for drivers, but the state said gross receipts is what keeps the roads toll free.
In 2010, the tax raked in $340 million and covered the cost of various road projects.
Suzio will be introducing the bill in February.

Senator Len Suzio (R) Endorses Jon Pulino for Treasurer

Editor,
I urge Middletown voters to vote for Jon Pulino for City Treasurer. I know Jon personally and I have always been impressed by his intelligence, intensity and incredible work ethic. John's three-pronged plan which includes a bipartisan treasurer's cabinet is a terrific idea and shows Jon's creativity and open-mindedness. I know if Jon is elected he will give a 110% effort to the job.
Please vote for Jon Pulino on Nov. 8th!

Senator on Your Sidewalk Thursday 4 to 6 pm
State Senator Len Suzio will hold another "Senator on Your Sidewalk" event this Thursday (Oct. 27) outside the Stop & Shop on 416 Main Street, Middletown.
From 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Stop & Shop, Suzio will talk with taxpayers and listen to their thoughts and comments about state taxes and spending, transportation, public safety and a whole host of issues.
Suzio will have on hand a new petition he has created to axe the tax on social security benefits. Connecticut is one of just 14 states to tax Social Security income.
"Why, with our already high cost of living, are we taxing Social Security income?" Suzio said. "Shouldn’t we be doing all we can to help seniors and those on fixed incomes, especially during these difficult times? I am asking the same questions up at the State Capitol. Taxing your social security benefits is wrong. If you feel the same way, you can help me by signing my petition. I will present your signatures to Gov. Malloy and to Democrat leaders to show them that the public is demanding that this tax be taken off our state's books."
Suzio will also bring his petition to cap the state’s gas tax for residents to sign. The gas tax cap petition has already been signed by hundreds of area taxpayers.
"I look forward to and enjoy these 'Sidewalk' events because I get to hear directly from taxpayers on what they want to see accomplished in Hartford," Suzio said. "I then take those ideas to the State Capitol."
Suzio (www.senatorsuzio.com) voted against the record tax hikes which took effect this summer.
Suzio has held similar “Sidewalk” event in Meriden, Cheshire and Middlefield..
