P&Z to Consider Changes To Sign Regulations

This Wednesday, the Planning and Zoning Commission is considering changes to the part of the Zoning Code that covers signs.

The sign regulations have the potential to significantly influence the economic development and the aesthetics of our city. The text determines the allowed purposes of signs, and where in the city, and where on a property or building specific kinds of signs are allowed; they regulate their size, lighting, and design.

P&Z will hold a public hearing on the proposed sign regulations this Wednesday at 7PM, in City Hall.

The regulations are fairly long -- can you summarize the changes? Or the intent of the changes?

Any other author or reader of The Eye would be free to prepare an executive summary, but as a Commissioner who must vote on the proposed changes, I hesitate to do so because a summary could reflect an opinion. A Commissioner should not enter into a public hearing with any prejudgements.
At the P&Z meeting, it is the responsibility of the Chair of Planning and Zoning to ensure the public is clear on the intent and effects of any application.

Let's enforce sight lines for drivers leaving establishments.

For example: Norfolk St. the gas station on the opposite corner from Midstate Tractor - they have a pair of red maple trees in the corner planter and then the add addtional sandwich signs - you cannot see the traffic coming from the left on RT 17 unless you stick your car out into traffic. The tree should be cut down.

Another culprit is Ace Hardware - their sandwich boards, etc. block your view of Rt. 17. I'm sure that there are plenty of other examples of signs blocking your sight line to traffic throughout the city.

Off-Site Advertising Prohibited (48.05.04): This section remains in the proposed version. I well recall the hassles put to G.U.Reed Electronics as well as the original Shapiros store location regarding their signage.

TODAY Middletown is a veritable pigpen of Off-Site Advertising. Why are the Off_Site Advertising regulations not being enforced????? Someone is not earning their keep.

While I'm on my stump, why are restaurants allowed to obstruct the sidewalks with their outdoor dining setups & plantings???
