Squeezebox Stompers at the Holy Trinity Stage

Zoom Genealogy Club - Saturday, July 17, 2021

Carol Ansel, Library Director of the Godfrey Memorial Library, will present "Mapping It All Out: A Geographic Approach to Genealogy."

Who doesn't love old maps? Visualizing your ancestors' geographic location(s) with the help of maps can sometimes bring about new realizations.

Carol will share a number of online sources for historic maps and present examples of how she has used maps in her own genealogical research.

The Zoom presentation will take place at 1:30 pm (EDT).  The new time will make it more convenient for the library's West Coast members to join the meeting.

From The Exhibit of American Negroes at the World Fair in Paris, 1900

At the turn of the century, W. E. B. Du Bois compiled a series of photographs for the "American Negro" exhibit at the 1900 Paris Exposition. He organized the 363 images into albums, entitled Types of American Negroes, Georgia, U.S.A. and Negro Life in Georgia, U.S.A.

Du Bois's work for the American Negro exhibit was extensive and much praised. In the Spring of 1900, Paris Exposition judges awarded him a gold medal for his role as "collaborator" and "compiler" of materials for the exhibit.

    At the turn of the century, W. E. B. Du Bois compiled a series of photographs for the "American Negro" exhibit at the 1900 Paris Exposition. He organized the 363 images into albums, entitled Types of American Negroes, Georgia, U.S.A. and Negro Life in Georgia, U.S.A.

    At the time, Du Bois was a professor of sociology at Atlanta University, committed to combating racism with empirical evidence of the economic, social, and cultural conditions of African Americans. He believed that a clear revelation of the facts of African American life and culture would challenge the claims of biological race scientists influential at the time, which proposed that African Americans were inherently inferior to Anglo-Americans. The photographs of affluent young African American men and women challenged the scientific "evidence" and popular racist caricatures of the day that ridiculed and sought to diminish African American social and economic success. Further, the wide range of hair styles and skin tones represented in the photographs demonstrated that the so-called "Negro type" was in fact a diverse group of distinct individuals. The one public statement Du Bois made concerning these photographs was that visitors to the American Negro exhibit would find "several volumes of photographs of typical Negro faces, which hardly square with conventional American ideas."1

    The Exhibit of American Negroes was a sociological display within the Palace of Social Economy at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. The exhibit was a joint effort between Daniel Murray, the Assistant Librarian of Congress, Thomas J. Calloway, a lawyer and the primary organizer of the exhibit, and W. E. B. Du Bois....  The materials for the exhibit were compiled by W.E.B. Du Bois.

    From Tight Hips to "Snake Hips" in 4 minutes.

    If you are of a certain age and have spent much of your working life at a desk, chances are you'll eventually experience tight hips, with symptoms of tightness or pain, a change in the way you walk or both. And frustration because you don't know why this happened or how to fix it.

    Resolution for hip & leg pain may be less complicated than you think. My recent discovery and practice of targeted exercise videos on youtube (Silver Sneakers & others) has resulted in an apparent complete recovery from what seemed on its way to debilitating pain in legs and hips. So I have an inclination to spread the good word of something that might help others.**

    About Tight Hips (from Healthline.com) What does it mean to have tight hips? A feeling of tightness across the hips comes from tension around the hip flexors. The hip flexors are a group of muscles around the top of the thighs that connect the upper leg to the hip. These muscles allow you to bend at the waist and raise your leg. (Some of the main hip flexors are the Iliopsoas, rectus femoris, tensor fasciae latae, sartorius.)

    Many people have tight hips, including both people who spend several hours a day sitting as well as regular gym-goers and professional athletes. Some people are more prone to tightness in that area of their body, too. Tight hips may put you at increased risk for injury due to the increased demands on tissues that aren’t moving properly. Before going to a physical therapist or doctor for treatment, try some of these exercises and see how you respond. Practice slowly and carefully at first, and see your doctor if you feel a need for reassurance.

    Did You Get Your COVID-19 Vaccine? Follow-Up Article


    Did You Get The COVID-19 Vaccine?

     

    Here is a follow-up to my article last week about “Did You Get The COVID-19 Vaccine?  

     

    For those of you who are hesitant or refuse to get the COVID-19 Vaccines please consider these facts that I discovered from an article that appeared in the Denver Post newspaper on June 24, 2021 titled “Nearly All COVID Deaths In U.S. Are Now Among Unvaccinated.”

     

    The article reported that the majority of COVID-19 related deaths in the nation are those who are not vaccinated from the COVID-19 virus.   It states, “Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. now are in people who weren’t vaccinated, a staggering demonstration of how effective the shots have been and an indication that deaths per day — now down to under 300 — could be practically zero if everyone eligible got the vaccine.”  It further stated about the Associated Press explanation from, “…available government data from May shows that “breakthrough” infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations. That’s about 0.1%.

    The article provides examples of people who did not vaccinate themselves from the COVID-19 virus when they had the opportunity who became infected with it and eventually died from it.  

     

    CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky stated this about the effectiveness of the COVID-19 Vaccines ““nearly every death, especially among adults, due to COVID-19, is, at this point, entirely preventable,” from the Denver Post article.  Walensky stated on June 18th that there is increasing evidence that the COVID-19 Vaccines are “moving us out of this pandemic,” according to Healio.com.

     

    For those of you who claim that the COVID-19 Vaccines are experimental drugs that is not true.  It was approved for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration.  The Pfizer Vaccine was approved last December 11, 2020, the Moderna Vaccine December 18, 2020 and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine February 27, 2021.

     

    Please get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus and protect yourself, your relatives, your friends, your co-workers and neighbors.  The COVID-19 Vaccines are F-R-E-E-FREE.

     

    Please do not become another casualty from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

    Happy Independence Day! July 4, 2021

     


    Happy Independence Day! 

     

    This year July 4, 2021 will mark the 245th birthday of our young nation. This was the day when the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence stating our separation from Great Britain so we could form our own country. On this day 245 years ago the 2nd Continental Congress unanimously ratified the Declaration of Independence which resulted in the thirteen colonies breaking away from England. 

     

    The opening of the Declaration of Independence states "The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."
