COVID-19 BOOSTER SHOTS FOR INDIVIDUALS AGES 16- & 17-YEARS OLD

On Thursday, December 9, 2021 the Food & Drug Administration approved another emergency use authorization of the COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for 16- & 17-year-old individuals six months after the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock stated, “Vaccination and getting a booster when eligible, along with other preventive measures like masking and avoiding large crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, remain our most effective methods for fighting COVID-19." She further stated "As people gather indoors with family and friends for the holidays, we can’t let up on all the preventive public health measures that we have been taking during the pandemic. With both the delta and omicron variants continuing to spread, vaccination remains the best protection against COVID-19.”

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky stated “Today, CDC is strengthening its booster recommendations and encouraging everyone 16 and older to receive a booster shot. Although we don’t have all the answers on the Omicron variant, initial data suggests that COVID-19 boosters help broaden and strengthen the protection against Omicron and other variants. We know that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, and I strongly encourage adolescents ages 16 and 17 to get their booster if they are at least 6 months post their initial Pfizer vaccination series.”

Now, all individuals ages 16 and above are eligible for COVID-19 vaccine booster shots. People ages 18 and above became eligible to receive a booster on November 19th for this age group they have the option of mix and matching their vaccines. Individuals ages 16 & 17 can only receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine booster.
