77th Anniversary of "D Day"-June 6, 1944

“D-DAY” JUNE 6, 1944.  77 YEARS AGO.

What was "D-Day" and when did it occur? "D-Day" occurred 77 years ago on June 6, 1944 and it was the Battle of Normandy which lasted from June to August 1944 which ultimately led to the "Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control," according to History.com's article "D-Day." It was nicknamed "Operation Overlord" by the Allies.

Who was involved? According to the same article "...some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning." Towards the end of August 1944 all of Northern France was liberated by the Allied Armies and by the following spring the Allies defeated Nazi Germany. This same article from History.com stated "The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe."
