More Weird Utility-Related Sightings

These are not quite as mysterious as the phone spotted on a pole on Highland Avenue between Pameacha Place and Bretton Road, but they are a bit eyebrow raising at a minimum.

First is a photo taken on Church Street which looks like a mess
of frayed wires covered up with a piece of raincoat-looking material. Although I was unable to get a picture of it, the yellow material is stenciled with "SNET" on the side facing the house. That indicates to me that the cloth was placed there by some personnel of AT&T, which bought Southern New England Telephone years ago.

Next we have an excessive length of phone cable that was coiled up, labeled and taped into a tree near the utility pole where the cable was hanging off.
Relics / aftermath of the brutal winter we just had? Up to code? Do I just have too much time on my hands to be noticing such things? What do you think?

Please let me have the pleasure of answering this for you. First anybody that had the drive to get out of their cave and brave the daylight would be able to answer this. On High St from RT17 to North Main and the adjoining streets were a buzz with Police cruisers/flashing lights on them.Next there were these really really, I mean really big orange trucks with men working up up up high on High St. Next there was an abundance of CL&P trucks, Comcast trucks and you guessed it SNET trucks. They were tapping your phones, putting in wireless SPY cameras and a special switch to zap you when you touch anything electrical. That is an answer worthy of your question.

Thank You it was my pleasure to enlighten you.

The first photo is a tarp over a splice. They're used to keep rain out of the splice until it's closed up.

I've seen the hanging coils and would guess they're left there by linemen for service technicians to run to a new property or to add a new line for someone.

Northeast Utilities has a Customer Service Department that is usually pretty responsive, if you call in the issue with the metal number on the closest pole. I think they have an on-line system as well. Even when a pole was originally installed by SNET, I think that NU acts as the responsible party. AT&T might be a much more difficult entity to deal with.

The scenarios you noted are not unusual at all. They are works in progress. Within a short time, days to weeks, you will find these points of interest resolved - and similar examples will show up in other locations.

Karen- despite there being logical explanations for what these are, I really enjoy this new column/feature of weird photos- its interesting & educational learn the what these things are- I also enjoy both the comic comments and the truthful explanations from the folks who write in-unless you research it or find someone who knows to ask how else would one be expected to know what these are? What is obvious to some isn't always to everyone- and I certainly admit I didn't know exactly what these were- Good & enlightening articles!
