According to the Wesleying website, a student actor was injured Thursday evening during a performance of the play, Shoot the Duke.
The Second Stage company, a student theater group issued this statement on Wesleying:
Tonight (Thursday) a student was injured during a Second Stage sponsored performance in
the Nicolson Lounge on campus. There was an accident with stage props,
resulting in one actor inadvertently injuring the other. The student
received immediate medical attention and is reported to be in stable
condition, conscious and responsive.
Emily Caffrey, a spokesperson for second stage said that no further details about the incident are currently available.
Peformances of Shoot the Duke are scheduled for Friday and Saturday. There is no word if the performances will be cancelled because of the incident.
UPDATE: A source says that during a choreographed stage fight, one student actor stabbed another student actor with a prop knife or sword. The injured student is reported in good condition.
There are strict procedures regarding the use of prop weapons in theatrical and film productions; they are available in stage manager handbooks. This incident demonstrates the importance of following those procedures in any production -- professional, student or amateur.
