"Beer Gods" Raise Over $2K For Oddfellows

Eli Cannon's Taproom kicked off its "Beer Gods Week" promotion with a fundraiser for the Oddfellows Playhouse.
With the restaurant closed on Mondays, Eli's made it's slightly-fantastical-yet-ever-soothing beer garden(s)  available, welcoming a couple of dozen brewers (many from CT, one from Middletown) who offered ticketholders tasting samples of various brews.
Eli's temporarily removed a section of fencing, allowing people to buy grilled cheese, tacos, and cupcakes from food trucks parked out back in the Kings Avenue city lot.

Oddfellows board member Quentin Phipps with Executive
Director Matt Pugliese.

The tasting tables were very busy.  Owner Phil Ouellette estimated that over $2200 dollars was raised for the children's theater thanks to about 180 paying guests (and a raffle of beer-related swag).  That's twice as much as last year.  No doubt the perfectly comfortable weather helped.

Shakespearean "Slam-Bash" Raises Money, Has Fun With The Bard

Art-Farm brought another successful night of iambic pentameter to Middletown with their "Shakespeare Slam and Elizabethan Masked Bash" fundraiser at Kidcity Saturday night.

The audience saw everything from serious performances of soliloquies from Hamlet and Henry the V, to more whimsical treatments of scenes from The Tempest and A MidSummer Night's Dream, to a bluesy sonnet and a sing-along version of Cole Porter's "Brush Up Your Shakespeare".  Others skipped the Bard's more well-known speeches to provide Shakespearean anagrams, Shakespearean insults, and a piece entitled "To Bird Or Not To Bird", complete with bird calls and a live flute soundtrack.

It was a fun night.

WNPR's Chion Wolf returned to host the event again this year, and her comfortable charm kept things moving right along.  Beer and wine flowed, snacks were passed around, and a live band played, quietly, in the bar area.  The performers weren't the only ones who spent time on wardrobe; many attendees wore festive outfits and masks.

Between the performers' sponsors and the paid tickets, a fair chunk of change was raised to support Art-Farm's planned July performance of Much Ado About Nothing at Middlesex Community College.

Food Improv Event to Benefit Oddfellows Playhouse

Food Improv: Eat Your Art Out

Oddfellows Playhouse is excited to announce the return of Food Improv: Where the Performing Arts Meets the Culinary Arts- Take 2!.   This year it will be taking place on Thursday, June 6 and again be held at the Wadsworth Mansion of Middletown.  Food Improv is a fundraising event to help the Playhouse raise money for scholarships and program support.  They are also excited to announce this year’s host is WNPR Connecticut Public Radio Host and Correspondent Lucy Nalpathanchil.

The inspiration for Food Improv came out of the similarities between the performing arts and culinary arts.  Both forms of art build a foundation of life-skills, especially for young people, through working on a team, poise under pressure, responsibility and preparation, and especially how to improvise.  The children who attend Oddfellows are learning these types of skills on a daily basis.  Oddfellows received an overwhelming response of how much fun the event was last year and the connections  made between these two fields that they decided to hold it again this year.

A tasting style event, Food Improv will showcase a variety of dishes created by some of the best chefs and restaurants throughout Connecticut.   Returning restaurants include: Riverhouse Catering , Miya Sushi of New Haven, The New England Emporium, Eli Cannon’s Tap Room, NoRA Cupcake Company, Tschudin Chocolates & Confections, Mattabesett Canoe Club, and Cold Stone Creamery of Middletown.  New participants include Lan Chi Restaurant and 2Hopewell.  The event will also feature a signature cocktail mixed and created by RIPE Craft Bar Juice.

“A fun twist to the event,” says Elizabeth Cipollina of Durham, Co-Chair of the event, “is that each chef has picked a play title from Oddfellows’ production history as inspiration for their dish.  We thought it would be a great way of incorporating theater into the food, while giving each chef an added culinary challenge.  We are excited to see what they come up with.  How they improvise.”

“Not only are we grateful to all the restaurants, but we’ve also had amazing support from our major sponsors, Citizen’s Bank, Connecticut Rental Center and the law offices of Farrell, Geenty, Sheeley, Boccalatte & Guarino, PC, and Updike, Kelley and Spellacy, PC” says Mary Murphy, who also Co-Chairs the event.  She goes on to say that “Each of these organizations has generously donated to Food Improv and we can’t thank them enough for all they have done.

Tickets for the event are $75 for individuals and $125 for couples.  All proceeds from your ticket will go directly to benefiting Oddfellows Playhouse.  The event runs from 6 p.m.- 9pm.  There will also be a live auction.

If you have any questions about the event, or want to purchase tickets, you can contact Director of Development Courtney Antonioli at 860-347-6143 or email her at Courtney@oddfellows.org.  Tickets can also be purchased online at www.oddfellows.org.

The inspiration of this event came from the similarities between the performing arts and the culinary arts.  Both forms of art teach fundamental life skills, such as learning how to work as a team, dedication, poise under pressure, responsibility, and especially how to improvise.  Theater and food teach us about other cultures and bring people together from a variety of backgrounds.  At Oddfellows Playhouse, these are the types of essential skills being taught every day.

For the event, fifteen of the best chefs and restaurants around the state will be making tasting style dishes for guests to try.  Restaurants that will be present at the event are: The Riverhouse at Goodspeed, Miya Sushi of New Haven, Amici Italian Grill, Typhoon, The New England Emporium, ESCA, Eli Cannon’s Tap Room, It’s Only Natural Restaurant, NoRA Cupcake Company, Tschudin Chocolates & Confections, A Little Imagination Cakes, Mattabesett Canoe Club, Cold Stone Creamery of Middletown, Blackbird, and Haveli.  In addition, beverages and alcohol will be supplied from Klekolo World Coffee and Thomas Hooker Brewery.

“A fun twist to the event,” says Elizabeth Cipollina of Durham, Co-Chair of the event, “is that each chef has picked a play title from Oddfellows’ production history as inspiration for their dish.  We thought it would be a neat way of incorporating theater into the food, while giving each chef an added culinary challenge.  We are excited to see what they come up with.  How they improvise.”   There will be also be a performance by the Traveling Circus and a short set by a local improvisational group.

“Not only are we grateful to all the restaurants, but we’ve also had amazing support from our major sponsors, Citizens Bank, Connecticut Rental Center, Centerplan Companies of Middletown, Done on the Run, VerTerra, Cardinal International, and Restaurant Equipment Paradise ” says Mary Murphy, who also Co-Chairs the event.  She goes on to say that “Each of these organizations has generously donated to Food Improv and we can’t thank them enough for all they have done.

  • WOW gym membership,
  • homemade decorated 3-tier cake,
  • vocalist for a wedding,

Holiday Plans?

Oddfellows presents David Sedaris’ witty and sardonic holiday treat, The SantaLand Diaries, adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello. Well-known local actor Tony Palmieri as Crumpet the Elf brings to life this humorous account of a Christmas elf’s experience in Macy’s department store. This show, directed by Jeffery Allen, is intended for mature elves. Performances are 7:00 pm on December 16 & 17, 7:00 & 9:00pm on December 18 and 2:00 pm on December 19. Tickets are $25 and $10. For more information and reservations, call (860) 347-6143 or visit our website at www.oddfellows.org.

Many of the professional artists involved in this production are donating their services to Oddfellows in order to make this a fundraising event. With 50% of the students in our fall classes receiving scholarship aid, it is as important as ever to raise the funds to keep Oddfellows’ doors open and lights on, especially as we enter the cold winter months! We hope that the SantaLand Diaries is a Christmas event enjoyed by the entire community.

Town Republicans Invite Right-Wing Bloviator to Host Fundraiser

NEWS/COMMENTARY by Ed McKeon

On Monday morning, WTIC-AM conservative talk show host declared that President Barack Obama has a "warped view of America," and in a conversation with Libertarian Presidential Candidate and "author" Wayne Allen Root, Vicevich agreed that Obama's speech to school children probably was designed, originally, to be "indoctrination." In the course of the same morning, Vicevich bashed the President, the President's policy in Afghanistan, the Department of Education, national news sources, universal health care, teachers unions, unions in general and, not-surprisingly, as he and his fellow conservatives call it, the "Democrat Party."

Just a typical weekday morning for a right-wing talk show host who gives himself the label of "libertarian" and uses a variety of familiar tactics to fan the conservative flames for an adoring audience, which evidenced by calls to his show, seem to share his outrage with the supposed impending flood of "socialist" reform proposed by Obama and the Democrats.

So, it's with some surprise that the Republican Party in Middletown, which practices very progressive politics on the local level, and has found support among the city's liberal thinkers, would choose the inflammatory Vicevich as an guest of honor and speaker for it's fundraiser for the mayor and Common Council candidates at First and Last Restaurant Thursday.

Republican town chairman David Bauer has already declared that he will not attend.

"I like to keep it simple," Bauer said. "He's a bully, and I won' t be in town for the meeting. I can choose what I listen to, and Jim Vicevich doesn't make the cut."

Bauer is one of the candidates for Common Council which the fundraiser purports to support.

"I'm always interested in what he has to say," Mayor Sebastian Giuliano said of Vicevich Monday. Though Giuliano added that some of the things Vicevich says are "out of whack."

On his radio show, Vicevich himself disavows the idea that Barack Obama is a racist or a Nazi, though he regularly allows callers to make the case, and then offers a weak rebuttal. He has called Obama's policy "socialist," and has encouraged listeners to join the ranks of those disrupting town hall meetings on health care, and often refers to Barack Obama in the diminutive as "the young president," an insult used among conservative commentators that some feel is the equivalent of calling him "boy." Vicevich regularly and repeatedly (sometimes six, eight, ten times per show, and then another half dozen times the next day) plays bits of speeches by Democratic speakers out of context, and repeatedly plays old film soundtracks which portray Democrats as inhuman, and "zombies," but portrays himself as unbiased.

When asked if he agreed with Vicevich and thought President Barack Obama had socialistic tendencies, Mayor Giuliano said, "I think he displays a few. Is there anything scarier than the federal government taking over more of these important things?"

"The government as a whole seems to be overstepping its bounds," Giuliano added. "Even on a local level we shouldn't take everything over. We can't be everything to everybody."

Democratic council members did not seem alarmed that the Republican candidates were inviting an extremist to their function.

"We've had Ned Lamont," Gerry Daley said. "And this Wednesday I think most of the Democratic candidates for governor will be visiting a fundraiser."

Vicevich is part of a nearly exclusively all-conservative lineup on WTIC-AM, the state's most powerful AM radio station which jettisoned any pretense of balance when if fired Diane Smith, Colin McEnroe and Stan Simpson earlier this year.
