Events at a Glance: July 16-29

Rather than over-saturating the Middletown Eye page with dozens of smaller event postings, we are going to try out having a weekly post of "Events at a Glance" which will help us to organize and consolidate emailed submissions of events going on around Middletown, and will hopefully help you, as the reader, to plan your week around the events that you would like to participate in around Middletown. As this is one of the first times this is being tried, please excuse any mistakes or formatting errors.

Middletown Teen Theater is presenting Legally Blonde, the Musical, this Thursday and  Friday at 7 pm , and Saturday at 1 and 7 pm at Middletown High School. Tickets are available at www.middletownteentheater.com or at the door.  Our mayor and our city manager are making cameo appearances as well.  This is the fourth summer production for the group and as in previous years, it will be a fantastic show!

Middletown’s own Steve Scionti brings to life all the passion, comedy and drama inherent in a Sicilian-American family. Co-written by director Anthony Crivello, the one-man play Hear What's In The Heart: A Shoemaker’s Tale garnered two Drama-Logue Awards from Los Angeles critics, and celebrates the life of Mr. Scionti's grandfather, Angelo Morello, who owned Angelo's Shoe Repair on Main Street in Middletown.

VOICE of the CITY, is a variety show from the heart of the community with performers of every style and sound, living, working, and creating in the city of Middletown and the surrounding area. It’s poetry, dance, song, comedy, and bits of wisdom. Where the community is the theater.

Once a very popular form of entertainment in the United States back in the early part of the 20th century, vaudeville whose origins are obscure is connected to the French term voix de ville. Translated into English means, “voice of the city”. Vaudeville is a variety show featuring the many voices in the city.

Monthly Swing and Blues Dance at Vinnies! This month, featuring DJ Chris Oksanen playing some hot swing and cool blues, taking place on Friday, July 27th from 8:30pm-12am with a free beginner lesson at 8:30, with the actual dance starting at 9pm. It's $8 admission, $5 for students and seniors.

The Middletown Garden Club will have a booth selling fall plants at the Wadsworth Mansion Open Air Market on August 26, from 10 am to 4 pm. The Fall Plant Sale planning meeting/breakfast will be on Saturday, July 28, at 9:30 am at the home of Ona McLaughlin. Please contact the Middletown Garden Club for more information and how to participate.

Alli Millstein will be performing with her band, Alli and the Oxen Frees. Along with Alli and the Oxen Frees, Kevin Keplacki and his band, Mumblty-Peg, an emerging folk rock group from Connecticut will be giving a benefit performance to raise money for Pathways Togo, Inc, a non-profit dedicated to supporting girls education in Togo, West Africa. By providing scholarships and small-scale community improvement grants, Pathways Togo embraces the vision: educate women, empower the world.

If you like the sound of Jenny Lewis or Beach House, you will love Alli and the Oxen Frees and if you are a fan of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, you will be a fan of Mumblty-Peg. So, come on down to The Buttonwood Tree for a great night of music to support an inspiring cause on July 28th at 8PM.

Diane & Dave perform popular American music from the 1930\'s, 40\'s, 50\'s, 60\'s and into the 21st Century. The acoustic duet covers everyone from Fats Waller, The Ink Spots and Bing Crosby, to Patsy Cline, Cat Stevens, Natalie Merchant and Adele Adkins. \"Nouveau Croon\" is their self-described musical style, as it frequently blends early jazz/pop influences with modern acoustic sensibilities. Original songs are presented in a similar style, and include \"Woopi Ti Ya!\" and \"italktoyou.\" An evening (or morning, in this case) with Diane & Dave includes something for everyone, and can best be described as a celebration of popular American music. Please join us for this fun and free event at Brew Bakers, July 29th at 10am!

As always, Middletown's artistic side is always overflowing with plenty of fun events and opportunities.
