MHS Girls' Crew Race

Middletown High School Girls' Crew Races E.O. Smith and Lewis Mills High Schools on Coventry Lake

This is our first post in the Middletown Eye and we are so excited to share the enthusiasm we have for our sport of rowing.  Middletown High School has been fortunate to have a rowing team since the early 1970's.  We are one of 13 public high schools in the state that spend our afternoons on the state's waterways.
This weekend the MHS girls' crew traveled to Coventry Lake to race E.O. Smith and Lewis Mills High Schools' girls' crews.  The 1st varsity 8 (a racing shell with 8 rowers and 1 coxswain) raced Smith and Mills.  The 2nd varsity 8 raced only Mills.  The 1V came in 2nd behind Smith and Mills came in 3rd.  The 2V came in 1st, beating Mills.  Captain Morgan Feshler shared her thoughts on the V1 race, "We rowed the hardest we possibly could and even though the outcome wasn't what we wanted we pulled the hardest we could and I am really proud of everyone."
This was the first race of the spring season and comes at the end of spring break for the MHS rowers.  This past week was spent in longer practices than during the regular school week and an increased focus on skills and overall team fitness.  An early season race like this for what is a relatively young squad is a great way to take a “pulse” as to where the team is and will help to establish a focus for the balance of the season.
"I definitely think we had really great first race," Captain Amber Drew said, "the best first race of the season we have ever had.  We have so much potential to do so much better this year that other crews better watch out, they better get ready for us."
Zoe Kaplan, one of the captains for the team, added "For the first race of the season we had a successful row.  We are just looking forward to continuing to improve and we have our sights on the next race."  The next race for both the boys' and girls' teams is next Wednesday, April 18th, at Lake Quonnipaug versus Guilford High School at 3pm.
All are welcome to come support our local rowers!  It is just a short ride from Middletown.  Below is the race schedule and we hope to submit a post after each race and to share some of our experiences as we practice, too.  Stop in regularly for updates.
