The following is from 150 years ago today, published in the Hartford Courant on November 20, 1861. Union forces captured Port Royal Sound, in South Carolina, on November 7th, 1861 (more information).

On the receipt of the Port Royal news, at Middletown, on Wednesday the bells were rung, flags displayed, and on Thursday, a salute was fired.
A large barn near the McDonough House, Middletown, was burnt on Sunday night. Loss about $500. No insurance.
Miss Ramsey of Middletown, assisted by Mr. Wilson and the choir of Christ Church gave a very successful concert last Friday evening.
